There are specific steps you should follow to remove hair extensions so that you minimize any damage to your hair. Hair extensions are a great option for having long hair in just a few hours instead of spending months growing out your hair. However hair extensions will cause some hair damage so you need to remove them properly.

There are several ways in which hair extensions can be applied to your hair. They can be sewn in, bonded, and glued. The most traditional method is glue. The application method used will depend on if you are using real human hair extensions or synthetic extensions.

Most hair extensions are only used for a short period of time but they can last for as long as 4 months. When removing bonded hair extensions you need to locate the braid. You real hair will have a braid just above the attached extension. You should loosen the braid and then snap off the hair extension.

If you are unsure then you should have your extensions removed by a hair professional.

For hair extensions that are attached by glue you can use glue dissolvers. The dissolver will loosen the hair extension so that you can easily brush the extensions out. For those that are sewn into your hair you need to locate the thread that attaches the extension and cut this thread. You need to be careful that you do not cut any of your real hair.

Your hair will be slightly damaged once you have removed the hair extensions and you should do a thorough washing and deep conditioning. You also should have your hair trimmed to get rid of any split ends as the glue will cause split ends and other damage. Having hair extensions is a lot of fun but you need to follow the directions for applying, care and removing otherwise you can severely damage your hair.
